About the Fund

What is the Fund and who is eligible to receive funding?

The Everytown Law Fund (the “Fund”) provides support to smaller and mid-sized law firms, solo practitioners, and non-profit legal projects, including law school clinics and legal services organizations, with a primary focus on the categories of cases described below. We encourage applications from BIPOC, women, LGBTQ+, and disabled-led firms and NGOs.

What types of litigation do you fund?

We are primarily focused on the following categories of litigation:

1. Claims seeking accountability for survivors of gun violence from potentially liable firearm manufacturers, distributors and retailers;
2. Claims that product defects caused unintentional shootings;
3. Claims based on unfair or deceptive marketing and/or sales practices;
4. Challenges to laws that increase the risk of armed confrontation and gun violence;
5. Lawsuits arising out of unjustified shootings or armed intimidation;
6. Lawsuits seeking to compel state and local officials to enforce gun safety laws;
7. Claims to compel disclosure of gun violence-related public records and data; and
8. Appeals arising in any of the above categories of litigation.

Applications to fund other innovative litigation projects related to Fund priorities will also be considered.

Please note that the Fund is especially interested in reviewing applications to support legal action seeking to address the impact of gun violence on BIPOC and other disproportionately affected communities.

What support do you provide?

Granted applications may include funding for litigation fees and costs of suit, and/or costs for law firms, legal services organizations and legal clinics without substantial existing financial resources. Pro bono contribution to cases is encouraged. In certain cases, Everytown Law may provide mentoring assistance or co-counseling.

Under program guidelines, the Fund will not seek repayment except from the proceeds of successful cases and will never seek to recover more than reimbursement for what it paid out.

What else should I consider when applying?

Please note that applications by attorneys who have some background in gun violence-related litigation or prevention will be preferred. Preference will also be provided to applicants who have pending cases or cases ready to file.

When is my application due?

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed as they are submitted.
