Online Ghost Gun Retailer JSD Supply Shutters Under Pressure from Lawsuits Alleging Illegal Firearm Sales; Everytown Law Responds

Survivors Turn Grief Into Power by Ensuring No Other Family Endures the Trauma of a Shooting with a Gun Sold by JSD Supply to Prohibited Buyers

NEW YORK – Online firearm retailer Not An LLC d/b/a JSD Supply (“JSD Supply”) has shuttered, filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy today following multiple lawsuits alleging illegal conduct with regards to the company’s marketing and sale of ghost guns to minors and other prohibited purchasers. Ghost guns are unserialized, untraceable fully operational weapons that have been fueling our nation’s gun violence crisis over the past several years.

“No parent should ever have to endure the trauma of being told their child has been shot and may not make it. My son, Guy, was only 17 when he was nearly killed by a minor who used an illegal ghost gun to bypass the laws meant to keep us safe,” said Denise Wieck, a volunteer with Moms Demand Action whose son was shot and wounded by a ghost gun sold by JSD Supply in 2021.“While Guy continues to live with life-altering challenges as a result of his injuries – from the loss of his eye, to chronic epilepsy, to anxiety and memory loss – we have chosen to turn our grief into a force for change. We’re relieved to hear of JSD Supply’s closure, as it ensures this company can no longer profit from the type of illegal conduct that forever changed our lives.”

“The shuttering of JSD Supply is a significant victory for public safety and a testament to the power of holding bad actors accountable in court when they thumb their noses at gun safety laws,” said Eric Tirschwell, Executive Director of Everytown Law. “Following the Supreme Court’s ruling on ghost guns in VanDerStok and the closure of the industry’s largest law-breaking manufacturer Polymer80, this bankruptcy further confirms the days of selling untraceable, DIY gun kits to evade common sense gun laws are over. This news serves as a stark warning that prioritizing profits over the lives of our children is a failing business model.”

“Thanks in large part to the courage of Guy Boyd and his family, JSD Supply will no longer terrorize our communities with its lethal ghost guns,” said Ben White of Bloch & White LLP. “We are proud to fight alongside Guy, Denise, Everytown Law and the University of Michigan Law School to hold them accountable.”

In March 2024, Everytown Law, Bloch & White LLP and the University of Michigan Law School announced the filing of a lawsuit in Michigan state court on behalf of Guy Boyd against JSD Supply seeking millions of dollars in damages. Boyd sought to hold JSD Supply accountable for recklessly selling gun-building kits to a 17-year old, Kyle Thueme, without taking any steps to verify his age. Prior to the sale to Thueme, JSD Supply publicly and falsely advertised for years that its ghost gun kits required no licensing or paperwork and could be owned completely “off the books.” Less than a month after receiving his ghost gun kit, Thueme predictably, tragically, and accidentally shot Boyd in the eye causing devastating, lifelong injuries.

In July 2024, the court rejected JSD Supply’s attempts to dismiss the lawsuit, allowing Boyd’s negligence, negligent entrustment, and consumer protection claims to proceed. JSD Supply’s bankruptcy filing comes shortly after the court ordered it to turn over documents in the discovery process. While the bankruptcy shutters the business and puts the lawsuit on hold for now, the Boyds and their legal team will continue to seek compensation for Guy’s life-long injuries.

In addition to Boyd’s lawsuit, the New Jersey Attorney General has also sued JSD Supply and related entities for their alleged dangerous and illegal sale of ghost gun kits to prohibited purchasers.
